Hyundai or Kia - which is better?

If it's been a while since you've dipped your toes in the automotive world, you might be surprised at the state of Hyundai and Kia. These two brands have been on a steady incline for a good 15 years and now produce some of the most exciting and tech-packed vehicles on the road. Well, it's no coincidence how great these brands have become, as they are actually owned by the same parent company. The two brands offer models in most segments for sedans and SUVs with plenty of EV and hybrid options. With all the similarities, you might be asking yourself, "Well, what's better, Hyundai or Kia?" While there is no simple answer to that question, we will highlight some of the key differences between the two. We'll also give you the advantages of buying each vehicle of the same class along with some similarities.  From midsize sedans like the Sonata and K5 all the way to larger SUVs like the Palisade and Telluride, Hyundai and Kia make sure that they have something for everyone. Let's compare each of the most popular models from Hyundai vs. Kia and see how they stack up. If you want a more thorough comparison, check out our full reviews for each model.

Hyundai vs. Kia | Warranty & Cost

While the meat and potatoes of warranty coverage are similar for both Hyundai and Kia, there are still some definite advantages for Hyundai. For starters, Hyundai offers 2 more years and unlimited mileage coverage for their rust protection. This is a nice perk, especially if you plan on being in a vehicle for the long term. There is also the inclusion of a 3-year, 36,000-mile limited maintenance program for Hyundai with no included maintenance for Kia. While these differences probably aren't enough to make a definitive choice, they could push you over the edge if the decision is close.

Hyundai Warranty

  • Powertrain Limited Warranty: 10 years / 100,000 miles
  • New Vehicle Limited Warranty: 5 years / 60,000 miles
  • Anti-Perforation (rust-through) Warranty: 7 years / unlimited miles
  • Roadside Assistance: 5 years / unlimited miles
  • 3-year/36,000-mile Limited Maintenance

  • New Vehicle Limited Warranty: 5 years / 60,000 miles

Hyundai vs. Kia | Design

The design difference between Hyundai and Kia is probably more preference than any sort of distinct advantage. If you take a look at the model comparisons below, you will see some stylish designs on both sides and even see some similarities. Coming from the same parent company, this shouldn't be a huge surprise. The key difference between the two would be the demographic targeted. Kia goes for a sportier audience with some aggressive lines and dynamic styling for their entire lineup. This is contrasted with the more upscale feel for Hyundai. While we wouldn't blame anyone for enjoying the style of a Kia, we believe that Hyundai has a style that will age better, and we prefer the overall luxurious feel without paying luxury prices.

Hyundai vs. Kia | Interior and Technology

The interior is where Hyundai offers the most distinct advantage over Kia. While both brands do a good job of incorporating technology and features, Hyundai tends to be more upscale than Kia. Sometimes this presents itself as better standard technology for the vehicle or unique features that Hyundai adds to their models before eventually trickling its way to Kia models. This means that certain features, such as the sanitizing glovebox in the Ioniq 9, aren't available right away or ever in a similar model like the Kia EV9. There is also more of a focus on using quality materials in the cabin. Think better plastics and more metal/premium trim material. This does come at a slight increase in cost, but probably not enough to become a deciding factor.

Hyundai vs. Kia | Performance

If you're looking to differentiate between Hyundai and Kia, performance is NOT the place to look. Many engines and EV platforms are quite similar, if not roughly the same engine. This is an area where coming from the same parent company makes your decision a little less complicated, as no matter what brand you choose, Hyundai or Kia, you will be in a vehicle that offers good gas mileage and reliability at an affordable price. It's also a benefit that both brands tend to offer hybrid versions of almost all of their models as well as several quality all-electric models.

Hyundai vs Kia sedans-which is better?

While Hyundai has several generations of Elantras and Sonatas in their history, Kia has changed the names of their sedans. The Forte has become the K4, and the Optima is now the K5. With a strong history of quality sedans from both makers, you can be sure that no matter which brand you choose, you will be happy with your ride. Key differences mostly come down to the overall style of each model as well as the Hyundai interiors looking a touch more upscale than Kia. Overall, this is going to come down to personal preference more than a distinct advantage over one another.

Hyundai vs Kia SUVs-which is better?

The SUV offerings for Hyundai and Kia are quite similar. From the smaller subcompact SUVs like the Venue and Soul to the larger midsize SUVs like the Telluride and Palisade, there is something for everyone. Hyundai does tend to get slightly better tech offerings in their models, and this becomes more apparent in the SUVs. Some of the higher-end tech makes its way to Hyundai first, so if a fully loaded model is what you're after, Hyundai is probably your best bet. Just like sedans, this will come down to preference of style as well as spending a bit more for the premium feel of Hyundai models.

Kia vs Hyundai Trucks/Vans-which is better??

For the more unique offerings of Hyundai and Kia, there isn't much to compare. Hyundai makes a truck-SUV crossover model, the Santa Cruz, which does not have anything remotely similar from Kia. On the flip side, if you're in the market for a van, you will be drawn to Kia, as their Carnival MPV model is the only one offered.

So, should you visit a Kia dealership or a Hyundai dealership?

If you made it through this entire article, you can see that Hyundai and Kia are pretty similar across the board. As a Hyundai dealership, it should come as no surprise that we prefer Hyundai to Kia, but it's not without reason. You don't spend anywhere near as much time looking at your car as you do driving it, so why not go for the interior that looks better? While Kia can be a bit cheaper for some models, you get what you pay for. Overall, it feels like Hyundai is the more deluxe brand, and we feel most people will be drawn to a vehicle that feels more luxurious. Now the more important question becomes, which Hyundai model should you buy? If you already have a good idea of which vehicle you would like, continue to our new Hyundai inventory to get up-to-date pricing on all our models.
