A what?
A sports adventure vehicle is
the perfect vehicle for those who live in the city but whose lifestyles take
them to the water's edge, the country or any other location where they can be
free to pursue their lifestyle interests. In the case of the new Hyundai Santa
Cruz, it is a new vehicle based on a platform it shares with the Hyundai Tucson
SUV.
It is an innovative look at a
contemporarily designed pickup/SAV that yields many innovative new looks and a
sporty, capable spirit. An array of daylight running lights are visible behind
the grille when lit.
From the side view, the Santa
Cruz features a radically raked greenhouse that lends a sense of urgency to the
overall look. Large 20-inch alloy wheels reside in armor-like wheel arches,
while the volume of the body features triangular sheer-edged surfaces that show
precision and character in the same stroke.
The bed in this adventure
vehicle is designed to combine the best of both worlds. Useful for carrying
oddly-shaped, dirty or bulky things, items in the bed can be protected by the
lockable tonneau cover. There are other compartments set aside to handle
smaller items, but the lid essentially converts the bed to a trunk which is of
importance to city-dwelling customers.
What moves the Hyundai Santa Cruz?
The new Hyundai Santa Cruz is
powered by a choice of two flexible engine choices. Standard is a 2.5-liter
direct-injected inline four-cylinder engine producing 190+ horsepower and 180
lb-ft of torque. It mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission for perfect
performance wherever and whenever needed.
Also available is a 2.5-liter
direct-injection and turbocharged engine for real power users. This engine
provides 275 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque linked to an 8-speed
dual-clutch automatic transmission for quick and satisfying shift operations. Front-wheel
drive is standard with both vehicles, but Advanced HTRAC all-wheel drive is an
available option. Equipped with this package, the naturally-aspirated engine
can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Order the turbocharged engine, and that load
increases to 5,000 pounds.
The HTRAC powertrain is
equipped with a multi-mode performance system with an electronic
variable-torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and
rear axles. Placing the system in Sport mode results in a more agile feeling
because of how it sends more torque to the rear wheels. There's also a wide
range of torque variability ranging from straight-line acceleration, medium and
high-speed cornering and hill starts.
Is The Hyundai Santa Cruz A Safe Choice?
The new Santa Cruz is more
than an on- and off-road vehicle. It's a safe one, too. Loaded with all the
features you would expect in a modern vehicle, it includes Hyundai's Standard
SmartSense Safety and Convenience suite with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
(FCA) with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Lane Keeping Assist and Driver
Attention Warning.
But that's not all. There are
a host of available safety features you can choose to add on. They include:
- Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)--Will
provide a warning if there is a rear-side vehicle. After the warning, BCA
automatically controls the vehicle to help avoid a collision if the risk
remains.
- Safe Exit Assist (SEA)-Makes you aware of traffic
coming from the rear. The system lets you know when it is safe to exit and even
keep the doors locked until traffic has passed.
- Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM)-Will display through a
screen in the gauge binnacle any vehicles in your blind spot.
- Highway Drive Assist (HDA)-Keeps your vehicle at a
safe following distance from vehicles ahead of you and also keeps your Santa
Cruz in its lane.
- Surround View Monitor (SVM)-Displays a bird's-eye view
around the vehicle while parking.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
applies emergency braking when the threat of a collision exists at the rear of
the vehicle while backing up.
